Famous Footwork

Nike x Footlocker

Famous Footwork is an in-store interactive installation created with Nike, Foot Locker, and RGA — a projected floor court with body-tracking cameras that lets shoppers step into the footwork of legendary NBA moves, scored in real time on timing and precision.

The Moves

RGA, Nike and Foot Locker approached us with a clear challenge: bring the footwork of legendary basketball moves to life in a way customers could physically learn and experience in store. They wanted shoppers to not just watch iconic plays, but to step into them and feel the timing, precision and rhythm that define great NBA moves. Our task was to translate these high skill sequences into an intuitive, trackable and rewarding interactive format that could run seamlessly on an LED floor, supported by real time body tracking and dynamic visual guidance. Through research and testing the following moves were selected for this Famous Footwork.

Process

Each move was motion-captured and broken down into precise foot-placement sequences, then rendered as real-time overlays on the LED floor. Kinect cameras track the player's position and timing, comparing each step against the reference sequence and scoring the result on accuracy and rhythm. The viewport renders below show the tracking and animation pipeline in action across multiple player positions.

Onboarding

To make complex footwork achievable, the experience combines two perspectives into a single system. A forward-facing 3D player demonstrates each sequence, conveying rhythm and full-body motion, while the LED floor mirrors the movement from the player's point of view.

Steps appear exactly where they need to land, creating the sensation of stepping into the move itself. This removes spatial ambiguity and lowers the barrier to entry, allowing players to focus less on figuring things out and more on keeping up.

Gameplay

Feedback is built directly into the floor, allowing players to see their movement as it happens. Each step leaves a visible imprint, creating a clear relationship between intended motion and actual performance.

This makes mistakes obvious, but also rewarding to correct. Players naturally begin to refine their timing and positioning, chasing cleaner runs and higher scores. What starts as imitation quickly becomes a game of mastery.

Visitor Journey

The experience begins before the player steps onto the court. Using their mobile device, players scan a QR code to access a lightweight interface where they can select a signature move and quickly set their height.

This simple setup step ensures the experience feels tailored from the start. Movement sequences are scaled to match each player's proportions, allowing foot placement and timing to feel natural regardless of skill level or physical differences.

Designed to be fast and unobtrusive, the mobile layer acts as a bridge into the experience rather than a barrier - getting players into the action within seconds while quietly personalising the challenge ahead.

Visuals

Real basketball performances were captured and translated into stylised 3D animations, preserving the nuance and rhythm of each sequence while maintaining a consistent visual language. As players complete each routine, the experience shifts from guidance to celebration.

The floor responds with a burst of colour — a heatwave-like effect that visualises energy and impact — before transitioning into a final, framed moment that invites players to capture and share their performance.

Famous Footwork transforms a familiar part of the game into something you can step into, struggle with, and finally land - and when you do, it's not just something you feel, it's something you take with you.
